Mergers and acquisitions are fast becoming essential elements of corporate strategy. In today's dynamic M & A marketplace, corporate transactions are frequently characterized by unprecedented speed. Since 2002, every year has been a record year. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Commerce, Merger and acquisition (M & A) deals in China jumped to more than 1,700 in the first 11 months of 2007. M&A saw robust growth in the financial services, property, manufacturing and mining sectors. Recent marketplace activity indicates that liquidity is imperative for driving M & A growth, and provided that the economy remains relatively stable, deal activity will continue in 2008.

Anyone considering a merger or acquisition has likely heard the statistics: the majority of M & A failures can be traced back to poor integration. The key to a profitable merger hinges on the successful integration of two organizations, each with its own culture, processes and operating structures. All of these disparate elements simply cannot be consolidated overnight. After a company has developed its M & A strategy and executed the deal, the bottom line comes down to successful integration: management's ability to integrate two organizations into an effective and streamlined operation is where transactions ultimately succeed — or fail — to deliver the much-anticipated synergies. A successful integration begins with a plan that will enable those synergies to start taking effect on Day 1.
